- Kigali Genocide Memorial
The Rwanda you are visiting today is built on a history of ashes, blood, tears and loss from the 1994 genocide that claimed over 100,000 lives in Rwanda. The Kigali Genocide memorial is a museum built to remind us and everyone who visits the country about our dark past; but it’s also a place that helps you appreciate how far the country has come from that historic event.
The memorial center is located in Kigali city and easily accessed from the CHOGM center and your hotel of residence
- Primate Trekking
Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda is known for being home to the rare mountain gorillas. In fact most tourists visit Rwanda to get a chance to spend one hour in the presence of these huge apes. When you visit Rwanda this June you can take off a day and Visit Volcanoes National Park for a mountain gorilla trekking experience. The mountain gorilla trekking experiences cost 1500 US dollars per person per a trek; however in this season the country have promotional offers for this activity that go to 500 US dollars per person per a trek. Mountain gorilla trekking are done only in Volcanoes National Park and they usually take between 4 to 6 hours depending on how far the gorilla family you’re trekking is from your starting point.
The gorilla park is home to 10 mountain gorilla families, some living close to starting point others quite far.
Volcanoes National Park is about 2 to 3 hours from Kigali city so you can travel to the park to and from on the same day.

Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park
Apart from the mountain gorillas, Rwanda is also home to the famous chimpanzees. You can trek the chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest National Park located about 5 to 6 hours from Kigali city. On top of having some of the cheapest trekking rates, this park also has other activities like canopy walk, hiking, waterfall treks and many more.
Chimpanzee trekking like mountain gorilla trekking takes about 4 to 5 hours depending on how far the chimpanzees are from your starting point.
However, unlike Volcanoes National Park which is close to Kigali city, Ngungwe National Park is quite far from the city so the whole chimpanzee trekking safari may be two to three days of your time.
- Wildlife Safari
If primates are not your thing, the good news is Rwanda also has a savannah park with savannah wildlife species. Akagera National Park about 2 hours from the Kigali city is home to over 200 wildlife species and about 400 bird species. You can visit this park for game drives, bird watching experiences, nature walks and many more. The park is close to Kigali city; however you cannot do all the activities in one day, so you may need about 2 days to enjoy your stay at the park.
