Difference between chimpanzee trekking and habituation : Chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation are among the activities to do during a tour around Uganda.

Some of the differences between chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation include the following;

  1. Definition

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is an activity during which tourists follow trained guides and rangers to locate and observe habituated chimpanzees in their natural habitat while Chimpanzee habituation is an activity carried out during tours in Uganda during which tourists visit the chimpanzees in their natural habitat to get them familiar with the presence of humans.

Chimpanzee trekking experiences involve visiting habituated groups of chimpanzees in their natural habitat while the chimpanzees visited during chimpanzee habituation experiences in Uganda are not habituated and still undergoing the process of seeing humans in their natural habitat.

Chimpanzee trekking experiences allow tourists to only spend 1 hour with the chimpanzees after finding them in the forests while during chimpanzee habituation, tourists can search for the chimpanzees for a whole day and spend more time observing the chimpanzees as compared to the chimpanzee trekking experience.

The cost of chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is cheaper as compared to chimpanzee habituation tours in the country. Permits for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale national park cost 250 USD while chimpanzee habituation permits cost 300 USD per person.

When visiting the Kyambura gorge for chimpanzee trekking, tourists are charged a fee of 100 USD per person for the permits. Permits for chimpanzee trekking in Budongo forest cost 140 USD per person. These permits can be booked through licensed tour operators in Uganda and are issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

Chimpanzee habituation in Uganda is only done in Kibale forest national park and also takes place in Budongo forest while chimpanzee trekking is carried out in Kibale forest national park, Kyambura gorge in Queen Elizabeth national park and also in the Budongo forests of Murchison falls national park.

During chimpanzee trekking experiences in Uganda, tourists are accompanied by ranger guides while the chimpanzee habituation experience also involves researchers who observe the behavior of the chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

Chimpanzee habituation experiences can be done for a full day during primate tours in Uganda while chimpanzee trekking tours take place in the morning and in the afternoon for about 4 hours around destinations like Kibale national park which is popular for primate safaris around the country.

The behavior of the chimpanzees visited during chimpanzee trekking is already studied while the behavior of the chimpanzees undergoing the habituation process is still being studied. However, chimpanzees are unpredictable during both encounters done by tourists.

Similarities between chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation

However there are also some similarities between chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation experiences in Uganda and they include the following;

Both activities start with briefing done by park officials about the rules and regulations to be followed during the search for the chimpanzees and how to act when around the chimpanzees. Briefing for chimpanzee trekking is done at Kanyanchu park headquarters in Kibale national park.

During chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation tours in Uganda, tourists spend time with the chimpanzees and enjoy recording videos and taking photos of the chimpanzees in their natural habitat. The chimpanzees can be observed as they feed, play, jump in the tree branches, groom themselves or relax in the forests during the chimpanzee tours around the country.

When searching for chimpanzees in their natural habitats during chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation experiences, tourists can also encounter various bird species, butterfly species and also see different primates in the forests.

Some of the primates which can also be encountered during the search for chimpanzees in their natural habitat include black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, red tailed monkeys, olive baboons, blue monkeys, L’hoest monkeys among others.

Destinations for chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation in Uganda

The destinations where chimpanzee trekking is carried out during tours in Uganda include the following;

  • Kibale forest national park

Kibale forest national park is located in western Uganda and is known for its big numbers of chimpanzees as well as other primates.

There are over 1500 chimpanzees found in Kibale national park which makes it an ideal location to track the chimpanzees in Uganda since the chances of seeing the chimpanzees during a tour at the destination is high.

Chimpanzee trekking tours in Kibale national park can also be combined with other activities at the destination including guided nature walks and also visiting the Bigodi wetlands as well as bird watching around the forest.

The Kibale forest national park can be accessed by driving along the Kampala-Mityana-Mubende-Fort Portal road which takes about 5 to 6 hours.

  • Budongo forest

The Budongo forest is another location for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda and chimpanzee habituation is also done around the destination.

The forest is part of Murchison falls national park and chimpanzee trekking is carried out in the morning and in the afternoon when visiting Budongo forest. Budongo forest is located in the southern part of the national park.

Briefing for chimpanzee trekking in Budongo forest is done at the Kaniyo pabidi headquarters which is also a starting point for the search of the chimpanzees found at the destination.

  • Kyambura gorge

The Kyambura gorge is the location where chimpanzees can be seen during tours around Queen Elizabeth National Park in south western Uganda.

Tourists visiting the Kyambura gorge can enjoy chimpanzee trekking in the morning and also in the afternoon as they visit Queen Elizabeth national park. other activities carried out around the gorge include hiking, bird watching as well as taking part in game drives around Queen Elizabeth national park, boat rides on Kazinga channel, bird watching experiences, lion tracking in the Kasenyi plains among other activities.

The dry season from June to September and December to February is considered the best time to visit chimpanzees during chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation experiences around Uganda. The chimpanzees can however also be visited during the rainy season in Uganda.
