What snacks can I carry on my mountain gorilla trekking experience : Mountain gorilla trekking is one of the most exciting, challenging and fulfilling safari and forest experience one can have on their safari in the pearl of Africa. Uganda is known for being home to over half of the world’s mountain gorilla population with this population living in south western Uganda in the ancient Bwindi Impenetrable rain forest.
Most tourists that visit Uganda will have mountain gorilla trekking top on their safari activity list and in this season where the mountain gorilla permits are at a discount everyone is seeking an opportunity to have a chance at trekking these famously rare apes.
Mountain gorilla trekking can be done all through the year and anytime you feel ready to take on this fun and adventurous activity you will be able to. The mountain gorilla trekking activity is also physically challenging especially if you are trekking the Bwindi National Park mountain gorilla sectors. The four sectors that are: – Buhoma, Nkuringo, Ruhija and Rushaga are unique in their own right with each harbouring about 3 to 5 or more mountain gorilla families; but the sectors are also similar in terms of trekking trails and the time you take trekking to find the mountain gorillas in each sector.
Don’t get me wrong, some trekking trails are smoother or rougher than others but they are all in the same category. This means that because of the natural make of these trekking trails you are most likely to spend some time going up and down this mountainous forest as you search and encounter mountain gorillas – in fact the average time you spend on a trekking experience in Bwindi National park is between 5 to 7 hours depending on the sector you are trekking and how far deep the mountain gorilla family your viewing is.
This long trekking stretch though exciting and fun, it can have a significant effect on your body and your energy levels, that’s why you’re advised to carry a snack or snacks on your trekking experience. But what snacks should one carry on their trekking experience?
There is a variety of snacks you can carry on your trekking experience but it advised to carry snacks that will quickly boast your energy levels and fill your stomach without making you exhausted or lazy from having the snack. Also snacks that easily digestible are very good. On top of carrying snacks you should make sure you have water to quench your thirsty and rehydrate your body even as you trek.
Fruits like apples, bananas, pawpaws, jack fruit, water melons, mangoes, berries etc. are good replenishes so you can also can them. Candy bars, sweets, chocolates etc. are good energy boasters so you should think of them. Chapattis, samosas, slices of bread, cereal biscuits, eggs, Viennas, sausages, kebabs, meat balls etc. are also good stomach fillers and they don’t make you feel heavy, so you can have them and still be able to continue on with you trek happily.
It’s important to note that all these are our suggestions from our different experiences during mountain gorilla trekking what has worked for us and others we know but if you need to consultant with a food nutritionist on what snacks you should carry that will replenish you on the trek and still not affect you trekking experience that would be great and helpful especially if you have diet issues or specific nutritional needs.
