Detailed Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Rwenzori Mountain National Park
Day 1 of the 10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari will start in Kampala where you will link up with our tour guide at 8am and together you will head to western Uganda to Rwenzori National Park.
This is a 9 to 10 hour journey so you will arrive in Rwenzori National Park in the evening, where you will check into you accommodation, freshen up, have dinner and a night rest.
On this day you will have a lunch stopover in Fort portal town before you proceed to Rwenzori.
Day 2: Game Viewing and Nature walk
Day 2 of the 10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari you will be up early have breakfast and after breakfast head out to Rwenzori National Park that is at the slopes of mountain Rwenzori to explore the different animal species that live in this park.
The game viewing will go on till the midmorning and then you will head back to your accommodation to relax and then have lunch. In the afternoon you will take a nature walk through the park to enjoy the unique landscape of the slopes of the great mountain and the ambience.
You will have dinner and a night rest at your accommodation.
Day 3: Hike to Nyabitaba – 2650m
Day 3 of the 10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari you will be up early have breakfast and then you will proceed to the Uganda Wildlife Authority office at the Nyakalengija trail head where you will be briefed about the hike and given different information about the mountain.
After the briefing you will then start your hike walking through the Bakonjo communities that are on the slopes of the mountain and then starting to climb through banana plantations, the forest and along River Mubuku to River Mahoma and then to Nyabitaba Hut which will be your pit stop for the day. You will have dinner and a night rest at Nyabitaba.
Day 4: John Matte – 3350m
Day 4 of the 10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari you will be up early, have breakfast and after breakfast continue on, on your hike up the mountain. You will go through the forest to Kurt Shafer Bridge below the intercession of the Mubuku Rivers. You will keep climbing now through the bamboo forest on a quite slippery and soggy trail that will lead you to the John Matte Hut. On this trail you will a number of giant heather and lobelia, the Nyamileju rock and unique vegetation along the way.
You will have dinner and a night rest at the John Matte Hut.
Day 5: Bujuku 3900m
Day 5 of the 10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari you will be up early, have breakfast and after breakfast you will continue your hike crossing the Bujuku River and moving to the lower Bigo Bog where you enjoy great sights of giant lobelias. You will then proceed to the upper Bigo bog and then to lake Bujuku and finally to Bujuku hut, where you will have dinner and a night rest.
Bujuku offers great views of parts of the Stanley peak.
Day 6: Elena 4541m
Day 6 of the 10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari you will be up early, have breakfast and after breakfast you will now embark on a strenuous climb of very soggy trails and higher altitude hence reducing availability of oxygen. Hikers at this point are advised to employee unique breathing and climbing techniques to help them utilise the available oxygen as they continue the climb.
You will pass through the groundsel gully then to the Scott Elliot pass which is 4372m. You will then go through a metal ladder to a very steep section of the trail until you reach the branch off to Elena Hut. You will then to Elena Hut where you will have dinner and a night rest.
Day 7: Mt Stanley- 5109m and Kitandara Hut 4027
Day 7 of the 10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari you will take on the most challenging and most fulfilling hike to Mt Stanley. After breakfast you will climb up through the Elena glacier to the Stanley plateau and then to the Margherita summit the highest peak of Mt.Rwenzori. This is a 3 hour long climb and also very strenuous so in some instances crampons and ropes may be used to easy on the difficulties. You will spend some time at the peak and after you will descend to Kitandara Hut, where you will have dinner and a night rest.
Day 8: Guy Yeoman 3260
Day 8 of the 10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari you will continue to descend, taking on a steep trail from Mt Baker to Fresh field pass where you can view parts of DRC and the surrounding region. You will then continue down on a soggy trail past the Bujangolo Rock Shelter also known as the historic expedition base camp for the Duke of Abruzzi in 1906. You will then continue to Guy Yeoman Hut, where you will have dinner and a night rest.
Day 9: Nyakalengiija 1600m
Day 9 of the10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari you will have breakfast and then continue descending down the mountain past Nyabitaba, lake Mahoma, the giant heather and many more points to the Nyakalengiija trail head.
This is a long descend and you will be at the Nyakalengiija trail head in the evening, then transfer to you accommodation, where you will freshen up, have dinner and a night rest.
Day 10: Transfer to Kampala
Day 10 of the 10 days Rwenzori National Park and Mt Rwenzori Hiking Safari you will be up at leisure, have breakfast and then check out of your accommodation. You will then embark on your journey back to Kampala where you will arrive in the evening. The tour guide will drop you at a location of your choice in Kampala or Entebbe.
You will have lunch en route on this day.
