Kwita Izina Ceremony (Gorilla Naming Ceremony in Rwanda) : Kwita Izina which means Giving a name to someone or Something in Kinyarwanda originated from traditional Rwandan naming ceremonies where newborn Gorillas are named in a special and unique gathering. The custom started in 2005 to honor and track the mountain Gorillas whose population was once on the brink of vanishing due to poaching, diseases and habitat loss.

Kwita Izina ceremony is a unique and fascinating cultural significant event in Rwanda celebrating the naming of newborn mountain gorillas. It’s an annual event which is usually held in Volcanoes National Park and has become a symbol of Rwanda’s commitment to conservation and protection of its mountain gorillas which are critically endangered species.

During the ceremony, each newborn gorilla is given a unique Kinyarwanda name. The names often reflect qualities or traits, such as bravery, beauty, or resilience. The ceremony typically involves traditional Rwandan music, dance performances, and speeches from dignitaries, conservationists, and local community leaders. It’s a festive and joyous occasion that brings together a huge number of participants from different sides of the world, including international guests and media.

Kwita Izina plays a crucial role in raising awareness about gorilla conservation and generating support for ongoing efforts to protect these endangered animals. The event also strengthens community involvement in conservation activities, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the protection of their natural environment.

Furthermore, the naming ceremony has become a major tourist attraction, which has drawn visitors from around the world who come to witness the event and learn more about Rwanda’s conservation successes. This large number of tourists contributes to the local economy and supports conservation initiatives, creating a positive feedback between tourism and wildlife protection.

For those who might not be aware Mountain Gorillas share 98% DNA with humans, we share a number of attributes including having unique faces from one individual to another. The purpose of naming the gorillas is to enable easy identification of each individual gorilla, to monitor its growth and the family or group where it belongs. Similar to the human social structure, Mountain Gorillas live in families headed by an adult male gorilla which protects and directs the movements of the family and so each of the families in the park is also given a name for that case naming of the individual gorillas and their families helps with monitoring the gorillas and subsequently protecting them.

Before 2015 when this ceremony was introduced it used to be the guides/rangers in Volcanoes National Park that could carry on for this naming of Mountain Gorillas Activity and later on in 2015 the Government of Rwanda decided to expand it into an international and local ceremony whereby every year international visitors and locals convene in Kinigi village which is located  in the foothills of the Virunga Mountains to give names to the baby gorillas born in the last one year.

The local communities are the immediate neighbours of the gorillas and are key to conserving the gorillas. And because they are involved in the Kwita Izina, a tradition they understand very well, they have become important partners in this conversation effort.

Different prominent people such as international and local celebrities are invited to name the baby gorillas – selecting from a pool of suggested local names or suggesting one’s own name which is translated into local dialect. This has given a lot of clout and publicity to the Kwita Izina ceremony. It can now be argued that it is one of the greatest honours in conservation, to be invited to name a baby gorilla in Rwanda.

Now, with each gorilla being given a name, they become a part of the wider global community and therefore it becomes a responsibility of everyone to protect the habitat of the gorillas and see that these great apes thrive!

Kwita Izina ceremony is a celebration of Rwanda’s dedication to preserving its mountain gorillas and their habitat. It reflects a deep cultural heritage and a forward-looking commitment to conservation, bridging the gap between tradition and modern environmental stewardship.
